Welcome to my web studio!
I’m a latecomer to the art game. I started drawing and painting after two major events in my life: I left academia and I got sober. These two changes created huge openings in my time and my energy.
In my searching, I found the right book—The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron, which taught me that I wanted to work with color—and the right teacher—Phil Sylvester at the Drawing Studio, who showed me that I could draw and paint after years of believing I couldn't.
In the summers, I work outside in soft pastels because they let me create broad planes of color and shadowy details. In the rainy months, I work inside, playing with acrylic landscapes, further abstractions, and the effects of the palette knife.
Painters I’m currently in love with:
Tamara de Lempicka
Odilon Redon and his bouquets
The Group of Seven
I am also a writer of thrillers, literary fiction, and recovery-oriented books. My memoir Sober Truths: The Making of an Honest Woman was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award. For more information about my books, click here.
I live in Portland with four cats (Frannie, Evie, Josie, and Mr. Sam), who always have a kind word for my creative work.
